PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

GOLDEN GATE FROZEN BRINE SHRIMP:

Kordon Golden Gate® of Novalek™, Inc. has been the foremost producer of cultured Artemia brine shrimp in the world for the past nine years. During this time, Golden Gate has been growing and harvesting Artemia in a specially developed 1000 acre (= 400 hectares) pond system in California, U.S.A.

GoldenGate is now relocating and greatly expanding its operation to thousands of acres of specially constructed shrimp ponds in northern China, that are under U.S. citizen management of the production and processing, and other U.S. quality control standards.Using the technology and species of brine shrimp developed and utilized in California, as well as a closely related species, Golden Gate can assure a continued and improved supply of cultured Artemia brine shrimp from coastal Shandong in northern China, another natural home-region for Artemia brine shrimp.

GOLDEN GATE ARTEMIA ARE NATURALLY BETTER: The Golden Gate aquaculture venture has been unique in having established large-scale ponds over which it has control of water quality, salinity, and use of nutrients for growing Artemia. The Golden Gate Artemia are fed natural foods and are particularly high in natural organic omega-3 fatty acids and related high nutrient proteins and fats.

Major operations managed by other competing suppliers of live and frozen brine shrimp use solar evaporation salt ponds that are designed for making salt and regularly dried and scraped, which is not  a natural environment. No nutrients can be put in these ponds because they would contaminate the salt making. Thus, brine shrimp production in solar salt ponds is secondary and limited, lacking in nutrients needed for natural nutritional value. The salinities used for salt making are not compatible with optimum conditions for growing brine shrimp. In order to make the claim that there are omega-3 acids in those Artemia harvested from solar salt ponds, the Artemia have to be force fed immediately before freezing so the nutrients are in their guts, without allowing time for the omega-3 to be naturally digested in their bodies. Much of this omega-3 is excreted before the Artemia are completely frozen. Therefore, the claims for those brine shrimp containing omega-3 are limited at best.

This new undertaking is not unexpected and has been in development for several years.  With 100% of Golden Gate’s production now relocated to thousands of acres of specially constructed ponds in coastal Shandong, there are assurances of a major stable supply for Golden Gate of frozen products over the long term.  Golden Gate with its predecessors has been in the forefront of developing Artemia brine shrimp harvesting for over 50 years. Golden Gate's original forerunner was the first to develop live and frozen products from San Francisco Bay, California and elsewhere. Through many decades Golden Gate products have always been of highest quality. With the new developments contributing to the aquaculture of Artemia brine shrimp, Golden Gate will have an ever-increasing role in providing the best in frozen foods for the aquarium trade and aquaculture, particularly for Europe.

PRODUCT INFORMATION:
This package contains 100% whole frozen and pre-washed Brine Shrimp (Artemia franciscana) an aquatic crustacean species centered in the San Francisco Bay region of California. but also recognized as wide spread.  "There are mixed views on whether all brine shrimp are part of one species or whether the varieties that have been identified are properly classified as separate species, according to the scientific literature" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brine_shrimp).

Brine Shrimp make excellent natural food for all aquarium and pond fishes as well as invertebrates. Kordon's premium grade Golden Gate Brine Shrimp are Aquaculture Raised and Nutrient Enriched from the feeds with which they are provided during their culture.

THE HISTORY OF BRINE SHRIMP:
Present-Day brine shrimp, now averaging only 3/8" long, provide a highly nutritious food for most aquarium fishes and invertebrates. Brine shrimp and their predecessors have been an important food for aquatic animals for hundreds of millions of years.

Brine shrimp's ancestors lived in North America. Europe and Asia about 75 million years ago in inland seas and bays, having already survived hundreds of millions of years through previous geologic periods of the Palaeozoic, Triassic and Jurassic.

Brine shrimp are "living fossils" akin to the coelocanth fishes and horseshoe crabs. Brine shrimp survive today as miniature versions of their ancient relatives which were over two feet long. In present-day form these amazing creatures subsist in salinities 3 or more times greater than normal sea water and thereby avoid most enemies. They are in no danger of becoming extinct. Brine shrimp thrive in huge populations in isolated areas of the world, particularly in Asia and North America.
