Pond Fish Protector™ is a professional quality water treatment that calms fishes, reduces losses, eases stress, minimizes infection and aids healing. Well known for its ability to help to protect fishes during handling, illness and transportation. Pond Fish Protector detoxifies the free ions of the heavy metals present in public water supplies, such as zinc, iron, lead, copper, and arsenic, which can be lethal to fishes and invertebrates.

Item No. 31031 Concentrated POND FISH PROTECTOR™ 1 gallon (3.78L) treats 19,200 gallons

Benefits & Purposes

Pond Fish Protector forms a multi-layered protective slime coating on fishes' skin, protecting fishes during handling and minimizing  infection. The coating works as an effective healing aid for fishes with bruises, missing scales, or frayed fins. The protective slime coating is formed by special polymer colloids, and does not involve irritating the fish’s surface by the use of salt.  Pond Fish Protector's polymer colloids beneficially absorb medicinal dyes, e.g., methylene blue and malachite green, as well as antibiotics, e.g., oxytetracycline and nitrofurazone. Pond Fish Protector acts as a carrier for such medications and can be used  as an aid in applying them to the fish’s skin. Pond Fish Protector combines skin slime replacers, that are more concentrated and faster working than that used in Kordon’s NovAqua Plus, with the addition of vitamin B12 and increased Echinacea, all of which aids in the normal healing process of injured fishes.

Directions for Use

To condition water for fishes add 1 fl. oz. of Pond Fish•Protector per 150 gallons of water, or 1 cup (8 fl. oz.) per 1200 gallons. Dosage can be increased or repeated without adverse effects.

If water is suspected of containing chloramines (a chemical complex of Chlorine and Ammonia), in any form, add Kordon’s Pond AmQuel Plus.

To fully condition tap water, to buffer pH and add electrolytes add Kordon’s Pond NovAqua Plus. Pond NovAqua Plus, and Pond AmQuel Plus and all of Kordon's treatments for aquatic use are fully compatible and equally effective in fresh and salt water.

THE IMPROTANCE OF REMOVING HEAVY METALS : Fish Protector detoxifies heavy metals that can be toxic to many aquatic organisms. Toxic metal ions in water can come from various sources, including home and commercial plumbing, medications, decorations and metal objects placed in the aquarium or pond, etc. It is essential to detoxify the heavy metals (such as zinc, iron, lead, copper, etc.) in the water supply for the fish to survive. The detoxifying capability of Fish Protector precipitates the metal ions into harmless compounds, rather than chelating them. Fish Protector forms a unique insoluble, polymeric salt with heavy metals that is stable under conditions of both high and low pH. This is a notable advantage over other products that rely strictly upon the chelation process. Such chelates are unstable, pH dependent, and can exchange their "bound" metal ion for another, releasing toxic ions into the water.

While tap water is acceptable to us and to pet animals (such as mammals -- dogs cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. -- and birds) as well as to farm animals, tap water varying in extent from source to source is toxic to fishes and other aquatic life.  This is particularly true for the heavy metals that it contains from the metal and plastic pipes that it goes through before it reaches you.  One of the important functions of Fish Protector is to  eliminate -- or at least greatly reduce -- heavy metals in the water.

One of the most toxic of heavy metals to fishes is copper, a common ingredient in tap water.  Fish Protector is capable of precipitating up to 1.17 ppm free copper ions (Cu++) from solution. When copper is present in the tap water or when copper medications are used, the copper ions can combine with glass, plastic, rock, gravel, and other objects and remain indefinitely in this state.  Variations in pH (acidity/alkalinity) may cause the copper to come back into solution and be toxic to fishes and invertebrates. Fish Protector permanently detoxifies copper and can be used to eliminate copper ion medications after their use as a treatment is completed.

WHEN SHIPPING FISHES: Add to shipping water to prevent damage due to shock and skin abrasion. Pond Fish•Protector does not interfere with fishes’ gills or breathing, or with the measurements of water quality test kits. add Pond Fish•Protector to the water at the recommended dosage (or greater in crowded shipping conditions).

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ADDITION OF POLYMER COLLOID SLIME COATINGS TO THE FISHES' HEALTH.  Fishes are sensitive to the presence or absence of their slime coating and are aware when it is reduced or missing, causing stress.  The Pond Fish Protector's coatings are substantial and multiple layered, anchoring cell layers deep into the skin of the fish to protect it from infections.  The coatings repel viruses and bacteria, thereby aiding in keeping pathogens away.  The coatings do not interfere at all with the fish's breathing, as is required for the release of carbon dioxide through the fish's gills, and the intake of oxygen from the water.
